OSD on site retention / detention

OSD on site retention / detention

The managed release of stormwater from a property into the municipal drainage network infrastructure during heavy rainstorm events is managed by the on-site retention-detention devices that have been configured for one of two purposes.  Retention is a design to retain usually a fixed amount of rainwater collection or stormwater whereas a detention design will hold back the peak flows (to the capacity of the storage available) and allow a controlled slow release of the peak flow to public drainage infrastructure.  The purpose is often to assist the capacity of public drainage infrastructure, with detention by extending out the time the drainage infrastructure needs to remove discharge stormwater for a site, or otherwise retention retains a certain amount of the storage volume for later use on the property which also has the effect of reducing the quantity of stormwater discharge by the storage amount but is not time offset.  These devices are commonly known as an OSD.

The OSD is a multi-function device capable of filtering the stormwater leaving a property and is usually located at or near the property boundary. An above ground retention / detention storage tank normally only handles rainwater collected from a roof catchment, whereas an inground storage tank can receive surfacewater and roofwater and manage the majority of run-off water of a site and control the volume of stormwater released using an orifice plate restrictor. The nominal size of the orifice is nominally 25mm up to 48mm for a suburban property.

The capability of the Sparkle Water OSD can include a filter for organics and also act as a silt pit so that the stormwater leaving the property doesn't carry physical contaminants into the public drainage infrastructure.
